Nostalgia-hunters are well rewarded these days. Just think of all the nice goodies we got (recently) from OnderStroom Records, Dark Entries Records and LTM Recordings.

EE Tapes can easily be added to this list of impressive labels. There back now with a fantastic EP, “Nostalgie éternelle” from the German duo Nostalgie éternelle. Stefan Heinze and Dieter Mauson bring you dark minimal synthpop / wave of outstanding quality. The 4 songs on this EP were released earlier on cassette-compilations.

“Without You” opens graciously with an effective mix of bass, nervous electronics and FALL-ish vocals. Next up is “Too Late To Be Sad”, a captivating instrumental. Pay attention to the fantastic bass (Trisomie 21) appearing for the first time halfway the song! This wonderful track alone ensures a high score for this release! I played it over and over again these last few days. The EP continues with more intriguing, adventurous bleeps and (very) dark synths in “Conquest” and the instrumental “Just Darkness”.

From the world of dust and dirt, the basement of music history… perhaps… we find Nostalgie Éternelle, a duo of Stefan Heinze and Dieter Mauson. In the second half of the 80s they were active in the world of cassettes. The small photo on the insert shows a whole bunch of them, presumably compilations in which they took part. Labelboss Eriek van Havere, himself around from the same years, hand picked four pieces from four compilation cassettes by this band. 'Minimal synth' is to some a word of magic, and I might be one (more from the 'hearing' department, then investing in obscure vinyl from those years). I do remember them pretty well, and quite enjoyed their bleepy rhythm machines, synthesizers, bass, cheap sampler and a voice that is not the best around. That last aspect belongs to 'minimal synth': a dark voice, not always in tune, angst ridden lyrics. I think Nostalgie Eternelle are/were at their best when they keep their tunes with voice, such as here in 'Too Late To Be Sad' and 'Just Darkness', although the other two pieces are almost as nice. Synthi-pop with dark edge. I have no idea where they stand in the picking order of forgotten bands but judging by these four tracks, I think someone should do a LP by them. I am sure they have plenty of good stuff in the vaults.

In de tweede helft van de jaren 1980 dook de naam Nostalgie Éternelle regelmatig op in de DIY cassettewereld, met een nadrukkelijke aanwezigheid op tal van compilaties. Maar hun eigen releases op kleinschalige labels als ZNS, IRRE en het gelieerde One Last Dream bereikten enkel de echte kenners, al schopte ‘Naked Life’ het later nog tot culthitje op minimal electronics bootlegs als ‘The New Wave Complex’. Niet vies van enige nostalgie gunt EE Tapes Nostalgie Eternelle nu met terugwerkende kracht een gelimiteerd (250 stuks) 7inch vinyldebuut, in twee versies die zich van elkaar onderscheiden door de hoeveelheid foto’s en stickers. Trouw aan de hoofdactiviteit van het Duitse duo, komen de vier tracks uit compilatiecassettes, die werden uitgebracht in hun hyperactieve jaar 1988. De primitieve elektronische muziek lijkt met een minimum aan middelen gemaakt, en in combinatie met de angstvolle stem van Stefan Heinze (Inox Kapell), krijgt de helft van de tracks een bijna punky karakter. Elke vinylkant sluit echter af met een atmosferisch stuk, waarvan ‘Too Late To Be Sad’ ons behoorlijk onder de indruk achterlaat. Geheel volgens de regels van de kunst duiken samen met deze release geruchten over reactivering op, we houden ons goede oor open, en durven hopen dat in één ruk door ook alle oude tapes worden opgepoetst.

Active during the late 80s/early 90s, Nostalgie Éternelle were a German duo formed by Stefan Heinze (aka Inox Kapell) and Dieter Mauson from Delta-Sleep-Inducing-Peptide. During that span of time they released different tapes and participated to many tape compilations. As far as I know they never had nothing released on vinyl until now that EE Tapes decided to make their music revive in the form of a four track 7" EP. Gathering four 1988 compilation tracks, EP, let the lovers of minimal synth sounds get acquainted with Nostalgie Eternelle's style. The 7" opens with "Without You", a track originally released on "Suoni Distorti", a compilation released back then by the Italian label Stella Mars. It is a sort of love/despair song which musically sounds like an early The Fall track (mainly because of the vocals), based on a bass line, synth monophonic bleeps and a drum machine. "Too Late To Be Sad" is an instrumental track with only synth sounds and based on an obsessive drumming/synth line with analog synth noises. Later a post punk bass line is added. Its atmospheres are kinda melancholic. "Conquest" is a synth wave/post punk tune with theatrical vocal interpretation where despair is the main element. "Just Darkness" was originally released on "Decline Vol.1" by the Italian label Discipline Prod (label run by Gianfranco Santoro, guy who is releasing in these days for his Final Muzik label a Nostalgie Éternelle CD compilation) and it is a minimal experimental synth tunes with monophonic noises, simple melodic lines and dissonant parts. EE Tapes already took us back into time. We now get back to the pure underground tape-format scene of the late 80s. Nostalgie Éternelle was a German duo active between 1986 & 1991. Stefan Heinze (Inox Kapell) and Dieter Mauson (one half of Delta-Sleep-Inducing Peptide, featuring Siegmar Fricke) released an impressive number of good-old tapes. EE Tapes recovered this project from dust releasing their first 7" vinyl EP with 4 tracks from 1988 only released on tape before.
The four tracks featured on this vinyl evoke memories of amateur bands playing and rehearsing in their dark cellars or garages. The sound quality suffers from modern technology, but reinforces the typical spirit from the 80s. Typical new-wave 80s bass play, a rhythm box and analogue electronics are the main substance of their work. Vocals have been added on two songs, “Conquest” being the most interesting one. I here like the little touch of Cabaret Voltaire in the bass guitar and some typical vintage electro sounds.
The two instrumental cuts are more like pure experiments, but here again we easily recognize and get back in the obscure new-wave and early electro spirit of the 80s.
Strictly limited to 250 copies this vinyl is meant to please all collectors while the real collectors probably have the original tapes. Notice by the way that the Italian label Final Muzik has now released the first CD ever from Nostalgie Eternelle featuring more songs from this duo. It will maybe push the duo to get back on track… who knows?!

EP "Nostalgie Éternelle" von Stefan Heinze und Dieter Mauson (eetapes.be)

Das Format der EP ist ein verherrlichungswertes, mehr als eine Single, aber dennoch 7 inch-Vinyl. Weniger als eine Mini-LP, aber doch mit 3-4 Liedern. Und die meisten laufen auf den magischen 33 UpM. In diesem Falle wurden Lieder des Jahres 1988, die seinerzeit auf Kassetten (noch so ein küssenwürdiges Format) erschienen, von Georg Moninger in 2011 neu gemischt, um sie auf gerade mal 250 Vinyl-Exemplaren zu pressen. Stefan Heinze ist Inox Kapell ist Mr. Inox. Was seinerzeit - noch in Leer - entstand, waren fast klassisch-traditionelle Songs, die es fürwahr wert sind, geborgen worden zu sein. "Without you" ist ein von Mr. Inox in "spezialem" Gesangsstil eingepieltes Liebeslied. "Too late to be sad" ein kaum entrinnbares Bass-Sündensizeriff-getriebenes und doch bedächtiges Instrumental. "Conquest" indes, von Dieter Mauson geschrieben, ist eines der intensivsten Independentlieder, die denkbar sind - hier lassen mindestens mal die NERVÖSEN DEUTSCHEN oder LENINGRAD SANDWICH grüßen (und ein existenzieller Text endet mit "too far, too fast for you"). Das vierte Lied schließlich "Just darkness" ist ein Analog-Sündensizer-Stehblues mit Schwärmen von schwirrenden Tönen auf dezenten Riffs. Eine EP, die man immer wieder gerne bewusst auflegt und ein echter Gegenpol zur unsäglichen mp3-l-Fön-Reizüberflutung. Das Coverartwork wartet mit Vierseiter, Beiblatt und Aufkleber auf und bietet einen Blick auf, wie der auch noch heute sehr jugendlich-frisch wirkende Mr. Inox vor ca. 25 Jahren aussah. Gut! Fragt sich nur, was aus Dieter Mauson wurde.

Como melómano y analista musical en un medio digital de información cultural independiente como Lux Atenea Webzine, es todo un orgullo haber recibido este precioso promocional. Que un mítico grupo como Nostalgie Éternelle haya tenido la cortesía de haberme enviado recientemente esta joya en vinilo es una clara muestra de identificación pasional y de sintonía absoluta con su arte musical que tanto me ha apasionado y sigue apasionándome. Un momento muy especial en mi vida que se ha convertido ya en algo inolvidable y que permanecerá indeleble en mi memoria. Cuando esta magia cultural surge entre un melómano analista y un grupo musical, uno se queda prácticamente sin palabras con las cuales describir mi más profundo agradecimiento en un momento único para mí. Y si, además, los temas incluidos son tan memorables e históricos como los atesorados en esta edición, la verdad es que su grandeza artística alcanza su máxima expresión en cuanto a emotividad y a sentimientos disfrutados durante su audición.

Presentado en el año 2011 a través del sello discográfico belga EE Tapes, el vinilo “EP” fue publicado en una edición limitada de 250 unidades, 165 de ellas sin numerar con una pegatina del grupo en su interior, y 85 numeradas a mano que incluían además dos fotografías. Cuatro temas seleccionados por Eriek Van Havere, alma mater del sello EE Tapes, que aparecieron originalmente en varias compilaciones oficiales del grupo Nostalgie Éternelle publicadas en cassette a finales de la década de los ochenta. Composiciones que han sido grabadas por Dieter Mauson y Stefan Heinze, masterizadas por Inox Kapell, y remasterizadas para esta edición en vinilo por Georg Monninger en la ciudad de Berlín en 2011. Una lujosa edición de calidad sonora tras esta cuidadosa producción y que resalta aún más con este precioso diseño artístico llevado a cabo por Jan Van Den Broeke. En definitiva, “EP” es una excelsa edición discográfica de culto para ser disfrutada en cuerpo y alma por los melómanos lectores de Lux Atenea Webzine entregados a la música electrónica independiente más innovadora de las últimas décadas y, sin duda alguna, el mítico grupo Nostalgie Eternelle es ya una de las formaciones musicales más emblemáticas y reconocidas por su maestría a la hora de componer auténticas delicatessen musicales.

Iniciamos la audición de este vinilo de culto poniendo suavemente su cara A en el giradiscos y empezando a deleitarnos con la magia sonora de Nostalgie Eternelle en el impresionante tema “Without You”. Música vanguardista y experimental donde, a pesar de las limitaciones del registro sonoro original y el admirable trabajo de remasterización, esta memorable composición sigue conservando ese oscuro espíritu indomable que lo perfiló, magnificándolo. A continuación, el impresionante tema instrumental titulado “Too Late To Be Sad” nos llevará a disfrutar de esta vibrante exquisitez sonora como si de una mágica máquina del tiempo se tratara, envolviéndonos con una melódica aura de futurismo y posmodernidad existencial que te identifica plenamente con el inquieto espíritu creativo de Nostalgie Éternelle. ¡¡¡“Too Late To Be Sad”, pasión musical dark-electro!!! Dando la vuelta con cuidado a este vinilo de culto y volviéndolo a depositar suavemente en el giradiscos, la cara B de esta obra musical se desplegará en todo su esplendor en cuanto la extraordinaria canción “Conquest” nos seduzca con esta siniestra belleza musical que aún sigue manteniendo inalterable su radiante inspiración underground, siendo el tema instrumental “Just Darkness” el que posteriormente extienda el aterciopelado telón que clausurará esta ilustre edición con otra contundente demostración del talento y el virtuosismo sonoro de Nostalgie Éternelle a través de texturas electrónicas expansivas que dejarán profundamente fascinados a nuestros melómanos lectores. “EP”, crème de la crème musical dentro de la escena dark-wave más selecta y distinguida de todos los tiempos. ¡¡¡Disfrútenlo!!!
